COVID-19 infections peaked this week with 884 cases in one day, reaching 16,165 cases and 533 deaths, almost two weeks after the quarantine ended in most parts of the country.

The main laboratory that tests for COVID-19 has collapsed due to an overwhelming demand, and many hospitals are at capacity, officials said.

There is a shortage of reagents and the country is running about 1,400 diagnostic tests a day, which may underestimate the pandemic’s magnitude, according to experts. The Minister of Health, Heidy Roca, estimates that infections will reach 100,000 by the end of July.
