Chile became one of the countries with the highest number of people infected and dying from coronavirus per million inhabitants. According to data from the Worldometers website, the South American country is the first in Latin America in terms of infections, with 9,652 cases per million inhabitants.

At the end of April, Chile had kept the numbers of infections and deaths under control. However, the strategy did not work as expected. Santiago, the capital, accounts for 80% of the infections.

After three months of failed actions, a complete halt in the Chilean capital has been proposed for at least two weeks. The quarantine established a month ago only managed to reduce mobility by 30%.
