The armed forces will continue to support public security efforts in Mexico for four more years, according to a decree issued by President Andres Lopez Obrador.

Since going out on the streets to fight drug-related violence in 2006, soldiers and Marines have been questioned and implicated in cases involving human rights abuses.

«The involvement of the armed forces in matters of public security must be exercised in an extraordinary, regulated, supervised, subordinate and complementary manner, in accordance with the constitutional mandate,» reads the decree published by the Mexican presidency.
