Last weekend, thousands of Sandinistas gathered in different cities of Nicaragua, in activities organized by the government, despite the COVID-19 threat.

The Catholic Church, through Cardinal Leopoldo Brenes, has called on the government and citizens to prevent the spread of the virus, mainly by avoiding unnecessary crowds of people.

The government’s position to date is that there is no «local community transmission» in that country and that cases confirmed by the executive, which at the moment are 16, are all imported.

The government’s data differ from the COVID-19 Citizens’ Observatory data, created by a network of independent collaborators, who have identified at least 781 cases, of which 88 died with symptoms related to the pandemic.
