The Russian president issued a constitutional reform in January which, as a result of a last-minute amendment in March, gives him the right to serve two additional terms at the end of the current term.

“We will organize the Russian national vote on the adoption of the revisions of the Constitution on July 1, 2020,” Putin said at the end of a videoconference meeting regarding this referendum.

The Russian president called for a constitutional referendum that would allow him to stand for re-election in 2024, when his fourth presidential term will have expired.
